My ‘All The Things I don’t Own’ piece is now available in my store. This is a delicate piece so I’m thinking of only doing about five, including this one. I shall also be adding my kitchen utensils piece to the shop this week. As I have already mentioned, this is an extremely delicate piece so the only way really of displaying it was in a box frame. There is a lot of box frame art to be had right now, some of which is mass produced with laser cutting machines. My work is not done like this, it is all hand cut with a scalpel and there is much though and feeling which goes into the work. So please bear that in mind. If you click on the screenshot that should take you to my store, if that doesn’t work click here.

All The Things I Don’t Own

DSCN2388 DSCN2389 DSCN2390 DSCN2391 DSCN2397

It was a sad day when I realised I don’t own that thingamajig that you use to hammer meat…

If I’m ever fortunate enough to move out of my parents house, there seems to be a lot of crap i’ll need to buy. This piece first came about with me doing little objects from the kitchen but then I started to feel a little bitter so I started cutting objects that I realised I don’t own. When I do move out, I’ll have two beautiful lights and a lot of cds and dvds…and that’s about it. If my mother is to believed, a spatula is not only a handy tool for cooking, but also an amazing design accessory for the home.

Gallery Visit at Oriel Myrddin: Clare Thornton

WP_000502 WP_000503 WP_000504 WP_000505

I said that I was going to try and get out to visit some exhibition and here is one which is on at Oriel Myrddin right now. The exhibition is titled The Dandy & The Mute and is by the artist Clare Thornton who is based in Bristol. You can find out more about her and the work she does here.

I was keen to visit this exhibition after seeing the tiles above on the gallery website and wondering what they were made from. It was a delight to see them and to realise that they are actually made from wax.  According to the write up, they are mouldings taken from a piece of cornicing from an old theatre. Her work is very serene and there was an amazing feeling of wonder upon entering the gallery space.

Artist Book

DSCN1852DSCN1855DSCN1850DSCN1856DSCN1848 DSCN1851

The sunshine has come to an end so this is what i have been working on through the rain. Nice to be able to finally get back into the swing of things again. I’ve been attempting to create this artist book for a while. It’s my entry into the Sheffield International Artist Book Prize. Hopefully I’ll have more luck with this competition that I did with the last one I entered, but that’s just the way it goes sometimes. As I mentioned, I’ve been working on this for a while but i was completely stumped for ages as to what direction to go in for it. Also, everytime I came up with an idea and went to work on it, my hands had other thoughts and nothing turned out the way I wanted it to. But I’m exceptionally pleased with this piece. The text inside reads: Love can sometimes be magic.

But Magic can sometimes just

be an illusion.

I’ve done prints of the text before but I loved it so much that i decided to use it for the book too. Let me know your thoughts on it, I’d love to know what you think if you could spare the time.

Take care,

Rach x

Bird Skull Collection

I’ve been having fun creating these little bell jar installations to add to my skull collection. They only measure about 10cm including the base. I’m still fascinated by the sideshow so have continued with that theme. Let me know what you think. They’re also available in my shop if you  are interested. Take care and enjoy the sunny weather! x

These installation boxes are some of the first full pieces of work I ever did. They were for my Foundation Diploma Graduation Show. I was looking into climate control at the time and everything surrounding it. The use of paper was a deliberate choice in reflecting how we use it everyday but it too, is a form of polluting due to the cutting down of trees obviously. The trees’s in the last box have little smart cars as leaves!

Ceramics

I love having a rummage through past work. Ive come to the conclusion that theres nothing better than having a look through what you’ve done in the past to clear your mind of a creative block. The first piece is about precious memories so for this I took some of my mothers baby clothes and dipped them in clay slip and then fired them. I didn’t mind actually that the shoe sort of cracked as it hinted at its fragility. The second was part of a group project in art school. We were supposed to create some sort of totem pole with all our different heads but we ran out of time on the module then. I love this head though as does my mother who has it sitting proudly in the front hall of the house.

Whimsy

This is the first in a series of bell jar installations I’m planning to do. Obviously they’re quite similar to ‘The Borrowers’ work that I did previously. The work is super small, the jar is only about 10cm in height.  I love doing work like this, I’m really glad that I’ve got back into it. Im just enjoying experimenting and seeing what I come up with. Enjoy and take care. x
