Ta-da…these are now available to buy in the Welsh Rare-bits Co. Shop. Click on the screen cap above to go to the shop.

My next project involves a badger skull that my sister brought up from the woods. I thought she was bringing me something nice, she walked in carrying a Marks&Spencers bag so obviously I thought it was food. You can imagine my suprese!!

Kitchen Utensils – Work In Progress

DSCN2405 DSCN2403 DSCN2402 DSCN2399I’m hoping to continue this project and make a whole loads of paper kitchen utensils. These are just the few that I managed to do today. Frying pans are hard work, as are ladles. Those are little bastards to make! The main theme of this subject that I have been covering is how we define ‘home’. I have broken it down though and obviously at the moment I’m tackling the kitchens. I’ve realised that kitchens are funny places as they seem to have become the social room these days. It’s sometimes the first room a person will see and i’m quite intrigued with how people keep their kitchens. Is it a designer kitchen? do you have all your cooking stuff on display? is it a basic kitchen? Bet you’re fed up with saying the word kitchen now so i’ll wrap up. Its just something that i’ve been looking into as a starter for some new work. I’m quite pleased with everything so far but can’t wait to add more. x

All The Things I Don’t Own

DSCN2388 DSCN2389 DSCN2390 DSCN2391 DSCN2397

It was a sad day when I realised I don’t own that thingamajig that you use to hammer meat…

If I’m ever fortunate enough to move out of my parents house, there seems to be a lot of crap i’ll need to buy. This piece first came about with me doing little objects from the kitchen but then I started to feel a little bitter so I started cutting objects that I realised I don’t own. When I do move out, I’ll have two beautiful lights and a lot of cds and dvds…and that’s about it. If my mother is to believed, a spatula is not only a handy tool for cooking, but also an amazing design accessory for the home.

Gallery Visit at Oriel Myrddin: Clare Thornton

WP_000502 WP_000503 WP_000504 WP_000505

I said that I was going to try and get out to visit some exhibition and here is one which is on at Oriel Myrddin right now. The exhibition is titled The Dandy & The Mute and is by the artist Clare Thornton who is based in Bristol. You can find out more about her and the work she does here.

I was keen to visit this exhibition after seeing the tiles above on the gallery website and wondering what they were made from. It was a delight to see them and to realise that they are actually made from wax.  According to the write up, they are mouldings taken from a piece of cornicing from an old theatre. Her work is very serene and there was an amazing feeling of wonder upon entering the gallery space.

New Facebook Page

Screen Shot 2013-11-05 at 21.08.43

Hope you’re all having a fantastic bonfire night, I had a lovely time sitting in a car park to view someone else’s fireworks…i’m far too cheap to pay to actually go in somewhere.

I’ve set up a new Facebook page for myself, thought it was probably about time I got somewhat professional.  Hope you will all pop over there for a snoop and to like the page.

Also, you have until the 11th November to buy one of my limited edition cushions that I have entered into the Ohh Deer pillow fight competition.  Here are my designs that I have entered: French Cat, Fancy and Bum

Cheers lovelies! x

Paper Cut Crown

crownredo1 crownredo2 crown3redo

Its my niece’s birthday in a couple of days so I thought I would make her a special crown for her party…it’ll probably be in shreds by the end of the night if the younger niece gets her hands on it! I’ve really enjoyed doing this, i go through various periods where I hate doing cut outs and nothing turns out how i’d like but I was fairly relaxed when I sat down to do this and didn’t heap a mound of pressure on myself for it.

I’ve been listening to the Reith Lectures recently which the artist Grayson Perry has been giving.  I always get rather apprehensive about listening to artists giving lectures about art as you always come out of it feeling rather inferior. Grayson Perry has a very down to earth way about him and doesn’t use a load of arty vocabulary where you spend more time concentrating on translating rather than just appreciating what is being said.  I highly recommend you have a listen if you think its something you might be interested in – Reith Lectures with Grayson Perry

Also, the Ohh Deer Pillow Fight competition is still open. You have little under a week to get your limited edition cushions. You can find my designs here 1,2,3

Right then, done! x

Sheffield International Artist Book Prize

DSCN2168  Finally got my catalogue in the post, thought it was never going to get here!

I’ve already done a post on the work I entered for this competition but the exhibition for it has kicked off now and I thought it warranted another post. I’m so pleased with how the wok turned out in the catalogue…I’m in a catalogue! 😲Oh my days, I’m such a dweeb!

Anyway, If you’re in Sheffield at all, the exhibition is on right now until 30th November at Bank Street Arts. For more info or if you’re interested in purchasing one of the catalogues head over to the website here.

Absolutely fantastic collection of work from all the artists that contributed, go check it out, you wont be sorry.

Also, let me know what you thought of the work either by commenting here or drop me an email.

Hope your all well. x

Do you remember those drawing exercises they would make you do on the Foundation course? One of them was learning to draw without taking your pen/pencil off the paper. There should be no isolated aspect to the drawing. I’ve got my niece staying with me and last christmas I bought her Art in a box from the TATE which was full of different projects for her to do. One of them was the taking a line for a walk drawing exercise. We haven’t embarked on that project yet but I decided to go ahead and do it while she was busy painting. Totally forgot how much fun it is and I actually really like the final outcome. I don’t know about anyone else but I have bouts of just not being able to get out of my own head, its crazy. Im just stuck on work which you have to be able to sell and constantly thinking about the consumer. Now I know that when you start out as an artist these are jobs you have to do but not when it affects your imagination. Thats why I enjoy the time my niece spends with me so much, I forget about creating work for my shop and more about just creating.

Take care,

Rach x

Thought Id share some photographs of my sketchbooks with you while I’m working on some new projects. In the selection I have sketchbooks that I used on my textile course. looking at different inspirations and experimenting with textures and pattern in fabrics as well as surface pattern. All knit work and drawings are my own, there are cut outs from magazines that I have in there that show where my inspiration came from as well as my own photographs of my surrounding woods. Ive also put in some photographs of my first cut-out book I did, as well as another sketchbook that went with it along the theme of Japan and Nature. I’ve then added my sketchbook that was part of my illustration degree. It was to create a reference book in our own style. The work I’ve shown from it is once again my own that I incorporated, also thought I’d do some close ups of my typography. Enjoy! x
